Apartment developer hopes to buy Powell School

The Powell School could soon have a new owner and a new use as apartments.

An Atlanta-based developer has a contract to buy the historic Powell School and renovate it for apartments, according to the property's guardian, the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation.
If financing is approved as expected in early 2014, The Integral Group LLC will begin renovating the former school at 2329 Sixth Ave. N., which was gutted by fire in 2011, said ATHP board member Sam Frazier.
Frazier said he didn't know how much the project would cost, but that plans would include 20 apartment units and 8 loft-style attic units.
Representatives of Integral, which is one of the developers of the Hope VI mixed-income housing near Powell School, didn't immediately return calls.
Stone Building Co. Inc., hired by ATHP for $360,000, is currently repairing the roof of the three-story, 33,000-square-foot building, which sits on 1.3 acres along with a second 4,000-square-foot cafeteria building.
