Gateway, South City propose Midtown tower

Centergy Two residential tower

Two developers are teaming up to bring the latest student housing project to intown Atlanta, a 22-story tower by Georgia Tech’s Technology Square.
Gateway Development and South City Partners LLC want to build the tower at Spring and 5th streets, beside the Centergy One building and Tech Square.
Ten years ago, Centergy and Tech Square expanded Tech’s campus across the Downtown Connector, and the project has become a catalyst for revitalizing the southern edge of Midtown. It’s also a draw for tech companies and operations. Panasonic Automotive Systems Company of America is opening an R&D center there staffed with software engineers, systems engineers and support staff. The company works closely with Georgia Tech. Earlier this summer, AT&T said it would put its newest innovation center on the ground floor of the Centergy building.
The residential tower is meant to add a missing piece to the overall project.
Gateway Development Services and South City Partners LLC presented plans for the tower Tuesday to Midtown’s Development Review Committee, a group of planners and neighborhood representatives.
The Preston Partnership LLC is designing the project, which will include 210 student apartments, about 18,000 square feet of office and retail, and amenities for students and office workers, such as rooftop terraces and swimming pools.
Gateway Development includes Mack Reece and David Tyndall, who were behind the original Centergy project. The new tower would connect to existing Centergy shops and The Spence, a restaurant launched by celebrity chef Richard Blais, creator of FLIP Burger Boutique. Centergy and Tech Square are busy during the day, but the tower could make up for one shortcoming, Tyndall said.
