MPS to consider converting Dover School to teacher housing

The Dover School is among nine vacant MPS buildings tabbed for potential sales.

The Greater Milwaukee Committee’s Teachtown MKE on Oct. 9 will outline plans to convert a Milwaukee Public Schools building in Bay View into housing for teachers and young professionals.
The Dover School building at 619 E. Dover St. is now vacant, and the MPS board is considering selling the property for redevelopment. The district called an Oct. 9 public meeting to discuss reuse of the building at the Bay View Middle and High School.
During that meeting, Teachtown MKE, dedicated to attracting more teachers to the city, will outline its concept to use the building for housing. Teachtown is a partnership including MPS, the Greater Milwaukee Committee, Teach for America and other organizations. Its programs include organizing social functions and welcome packages for teachers coming to work in Milwaukee. Providing apartments for those new teachers is among the organization’s goals.
