Century-old building will become a 4-star hotel in Seattle's Belltown

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has been selected to manage a new hotel that will open next year in this downtown Seattle building.

Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants officials announced Thursday that they'll open a four-star hotel next year in a century-old building at Second and Virginia in downtown Seattle.
The Puget Sound Business Journal first reported on the project this spring, though project backers released few details at the time.
A Seattle real-estate development and management company called Shemiran Trade is turning what was an apartment building, the Palladian, into a 97-room hotel. David Cohanim is Shemiran Trade’s development director.
The hotel in the Belltown neighborhood will “embody the gritty elegance of the city,” states a Kimpton press release, and will have 1,100 square feet of “swank meeting and event space, a trend-setting restaurant and a lounge with an edgy urban vibe.”
Designer Nicole Hollis of San Francisco will oversee the project, which is scheduled to open in late 2014. JTM is the general contractor.
The Palladian was originally built as the Calhoun Hotel. The Corner Bar operated at the base of the building until several months ago, and the people who lived in the apartments got help through a city program to move, said Kimpton spokeswoman Brandyn Hull.
San Francisco-based Kimpton operates 60 hotels and nearly 70 restaurants, bars and lounges. Its Seattle properties are Hotel Monaco, Vintage Park and the Alexis.
This story has been updated with the general contractor's name.
